COURSE INFO
COURSE DESCRIPTION
A four-day comprehensive course in vascular ultrasound designed for cardiologists, echocardiographers, radiologists, radiology sonographers and those cross-training in vascular ultrasound. Areas of focus include duplex of the extracranial carotid arteries and peripheral arteries and veins, and renal arteries and kidneys. Taught through lectures featuring actual case studies, ample time is set aside each afternoon for practical hands-on scanning of live models. Participants will learn techniques for detecting and quantifying disease in the carotid arteries, peripheral arteries and veins, abdominal aorta, renal arteries and kidneys. Interpretive skills are developed through case presentations and interpretation sessions. The course offers a comprehensive overview, from the patient’s referral, clinical history, physical assessment, to the final interpretation.

Students who successfully complete the course will be able to:
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of vascular anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology.
  • Understand the clinical applications of duplex scanning of the extracranial arterial circulation.
  • Understand the clinical applications of duplex scanning of the lower extremity arteries and veins.
  • Understand the clinical applications of duplex scanning of the renal arteries.
  • Understand basic interpretation criteria and develop the skills to interpret pathology cases.
Participants may enroll in specific sections of interest or for the complete 4/5-day series.
COURSE SCHEDULE

Day 1: Carotid Duplex Scanning (8 a.m. - 4 p.m.)
Day 2: Carotid Duplex Scanning/Lower Extremity Arterial Evaluation (8 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

Day 1 includes training in duplex of the extracranial carotid and vertebral arteries. Students are presented with comprehensive lectures that include actual case studies. In addition, ample individualized hands-on scanning time is given using models with and without pathology. Participants are instructed in specific techniques for detecting and quantifying disease in the extracranial carotid arteries.

Day 2 is divided into two sections. The 1st section wraps up carotid duplex scanning, including case interpretation. The 2nd section offers the student a basic knowledge of lower extremity arterial vascular anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology & interpretation skills. An ample portion of the day is set aside for hands-on scanning with individualized instruction using models with and without pathology.  This section satisfies 14.0 hours of SVU CME credit or 14 Category I AMA credit for physicians.

Faculty:
Anne Heneberry, BS, RVT, Instructor, Pacific Vascular, Inc.
Lisa McAdam, BS, RVT, Instructor, Pacific Vascular, Inc.

Day 3: Abdominal Vascular Duplex (8 a.m. - 4 p.m.)
Day 3 focuses on instruction in the use of duplex scanning of the renal arteries and kidneys. Other abdominal exams are discussed as well, including duplex of the abdominal aorta, mesenteric arteries, and liver vasculature.  This section satisfies 7.0 hours of SVU CME credit or 7 Category I AMA credit for physicians.

Faculty:
Norma J. Vandenberghe, RN, RVT

Day 4: Lower Extremity Venous Duplex / Upper Extremity Evaluations (8 a.m. - 4 p.m.)
Day 4 offers the student a basic knowledge of upper and lower extremity venous anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology & interpretation skills, as well as covering the upper extremity arterial evaluation. An ample portion of the day is set aside for hands-on scanning with individualized instruction using models with and without pathology.  This section satisfies 7.0 hours of SVU CME credit or 7 Category I AMA credit for physicians.

Faculty:
Josh Mesger, BS, RVT, Instructor, Pacific Vascular, Inc.
Elimee Rosagaron, BS, RVT, Instructor, Pacific Vascular, Inc.

Day 5: Venous Insufficiency Course (8 a.m. - 4 p.m.)
The Venous Insufficiency Course is a specialized class for sonographers and physicians who will be incorporating the complexity of venous insufficiency evaluation and various means of therapy into their individual laboratories and practices. This course covers specific pathophysiology, relevant anatomy, interpretation skills as well as pre and post operative ultrasound assessment. Individuals who attend this course MUST have good working knowledge of venous anatomy and pathophysiology or have attended the Lower Extremity Venous Testing course during the vascular ultrasound series. An ample portion of the day is set aside for hands on scanning with individualized instruction using models with and without pathology.  This section satisfies 7.0 hours of SVU CME credit or 7 Category I AMA credit for physicians.

Faculty:
Lisa McAdam, BS, RVT, Instructor, Pacific Vascular, Inc.
Mark S. Kim, MD, RVT, Avena Vascular

This program meets the criteria for SVU-CMEs which are accepted by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) towards recertification, the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) for Category A credit, and the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL) for accreditation.  SVU accredits this course for 28 hours of CME.  Pacific Vascular Institute for Continuing Medical Education (PVICME) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.  PVICME takes responsibility for the content, quality, and scientific integrity of this CME activity.  PVICME designates this educational activity for a maximum of 28 AMA PRA Category 1 credit(s)™.  Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
